So You Wanna Be a Cowboy

January 09, 2019

Cowboy culture and the western lifestyle is often romanticized.  Those who live it, cherish it.  Those that don't, envy it.  In reality, it can be a hard life, but for those who live it, the reward is worth the risk.

Everything in life comes at a price.  All that is important to you has an opportunity cost,  whether in monetary terms, relationship or time, there is a cost.   You calculate this cost by determining the amount of sacrifice you are willing to forego.

Only you can decide whether the opportunity is worth the price you'll pay.

For instance, if you say, “I want to be a Professional Cowboy,”  you must ask yourself the question, “How?”  That question generates a valid and necessary investigation into the probable sacrifices and struggles involved to reach your goal.

Then ask yourself “Why?”   Estimate the worth of the alternative that is forgone compared to the value of the opportunity pursued.  Is the reward worth the risk?  Is the exchange worth it to you?

Wise choices must be made in order to have the right work-life balance. There are tons of things you want to do, so you must decide, is this worth the time and effort and is the tradeoff worth the price.

Talk to those who have made the sacrifice and talk to those who have foregone the sacrifice.  It's an individual choice each person must make for themselves.  There are no guarantees either way you choose.  Passion can be the deciding factor.
